Information Management Sysytem for Karate Schools
by brian.corrales on Dec.16, 2008, under Martial Arts, Technology
As many of you know, I am the owner and chief instructor of Wasatch Martial Arts Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tomorrow I am holding a test for about twenty of my students. A major test like this happens quarterly with smaller testing groups in the middle. Traditionally, each testing candidate will complete a testing application, which I will later file.
As you can imagine, this can become an administrative nightmare. To decrease the paper, I have developed an online management system for all my rank tests. Students and families create user accounts on my site with their basic information, including their Gup membership Id, which they receive from headquarters. This information is saved so all they have to do is login and submit a test request. A test request is merely them selecting their testing date and hitting submit. Later, I can generate a report of the test and give each studebt a pass/fail and an average score.
I believe I have greatly simplified the testing process and I believe many other Soo Bahk Do instructors may benefit from this management system. My next step is to get the system ready for market. If any instructors have a request or are interested in kearning more, I hope you’ll leave a comment here.

Well thats great, I have worked at a martial arts school for about 4 + years as an administrative assistant. Our school was bursting at the seams and keeping track of all of the data was a nightmare as you described it. When I got there, the school had just started working on getting a new program set that would keep track of basically everything that a “Generic Martial Arts” would need to keep track of. However it became clear that the software, albeit very thorough in what it managed, was very complicated and was not user friendly in any way. Its data was held in an access database and it always needed maintenance. It did its job, but keeping the program up to date was probably more difficult than it should have been. This program is called MAS it is developed by Champions Way. I have since then been trying to figure out a way to make a web app that can effectively replace the need for MAS. It would have a front end which would provide the website and the backend would manage the website as well as manage the students. The website would let the members also pay for their tuition. Since I have been thinking about this for awhile I can see the big picture of what that could be but I can’t seem to figure out where to start. I would like to be able to return from my mission with the skills that would enable me to accomplish this task.
